I finished college last year, and I have solid typing skills and decent knowledge of computer applications. I’m thinking about moving to one of these cities, and since it will probably take me awhile to find a suitable permanent job, I might try to work as an office temp for awhile.

How difficult is it to get temporary office work? How long does it usually take to get your first assignment?
I should add that I don’t have much experience working in an office, if that would make a difference.

Should one participate in office politics? What is the right professional behavior?

We have 3 offices that pass through from one to the next. Each office has a door to the hallway. Yet my coworker insists on always walking through my office to get to the hall. Then when she comes back into the office she just about gets whiplash turning to look at my monitor. She’s been here forever and she trained me but she’s not a supervisor. It’s annoying even when I’m actually working and not just messing around online.

I don’t want to get confrontational as we have a good working relationship. Also, she’s not technically doing anything wrong so I can’t really complain to the boss. But dang, it’s really annoying to have someone literally looking over your shoulder every 5 minutes.

I’ve tried blocking the path through my office with chairs and boxes but she’d rather squeeze through my little traps to get the shortcut rather than endure the hall. Plus, if she trips over any of my traps then I’ll have to go take a pee test and that would be a bad thing.

What to do?
Some funny answers so far.

First, I’d have to take a pee test because my sloppiness (leaving boxes in the way) caused the accident.

Second, there is NO romantic stuff going on. I like my women to be not grandmothers and I prefer the gf I already have. But good idea otherwise :)

Vampira asked:

I was scammed into buying office supplies over the phone. The lady presented herself as someone who knows my supervisor. She knew a lot of info and sounded legit. She said that she had spoken with my supervisor after I had left for the day, and he said to call me next week to go over what I needed, because I do the ordering. I believed her, and said “okay” to the supplies. My manager was out the week she called, and when he came back, he said he never authorized anything and didn’t know the lady. The supplies are on there way, and I want to know if I can refuse them when they arrive, since they weren’t actually authorized by my supervisor?? Can they get me in trouble if I refuse to pay the bill? I can’t believe I fell for this, I have never fallen for one of this calls before, and I get a lot. I feel so stupid!!!

What are the most important supplies/tools needed for an office?
