Installing Office won’t slow your computer down at all. Seeing as you’re running a newer laptop (HP Touch) you have enough juice to run Office and a lot of other programs.Unlike virus scanners and firewalls, Microsoft Office doesn’t run all the time and use resources unless you leave programs running when you don’t use them.
If price is the problem for you, then try downloading OpenOffice - - it’s free and you can open/save Microsoft Office documents with it.
Try searching your computer for the program “Microsoft Works” - it’s a free office program that’s usually included with HP computers, it can open/save Microsoft Word documents.
Alternatively, you can wait until Microsoft unveils it’s Office web apps service. Essentially, it’s a free, online version of Microsoft Office that you can use. It’s not out yet, but it should be in the coming months. Minimarkoman

You should also try SSuite Office for a free office suite. They have a whole range of office suites that are free for download.
Their software also don’t need to run on Java or .NET, like so many open source office suites, so it makes their software very small and efficient.

As Minimarkoman said, Office will not be a huge burden on a new computer. If you want to use it, you will need to put it on your computer. Your brother most likely has the trial version of Office if it came pre-installed on his computer. You can download this and use it for 60 days here:
Try it out and see how your computer functions with it installed. If it starts running slow then you can uninstall it without being out any money. If you do decide to buy it and you are a student, here’s a link to an amazing deal:
