How to take ownership of land that was given to me?

office supply
jmwood2404 asked:

My father has given me an acre of land off of his 10 acres. What is the process of taking ownership? I have read somewhere that there is some kind of paperwork that you can get from Staples or some other office supply store that will help aid in doing this. I would rather do all of this myself if possible.

Thanks,

Staples? Are you kidding? He has to transfer the deed to you.

In order to take ownership of the land your father has to sign the land over to you this is called a land deed. This is usually done at a court house. My mom and dad got divorced about 10 years ago.The divorce degree said that the land that they purchased before I was born was to be signed over to me.My dad tried to fight it but he had no choice but to sign it over.In 2005 I received a letter from his lawyer saying that the land was signed over to me.In 2005 and 2006 my dad did not pay the taxes on it and it was auctioned off and sold.I went to the court house with my copy from his lawyer, I wanted to know where my deed was.Thats when the lady said that it was sold because of the failure to pay the property taxes.Since the land had been transferred to me after it was autioned off, the lady had no choice but to void the sale.By the grace of god I have been paying the taxes since 2005 and I kept my receipts. So actually the county that I live in almost cost me to lose my land.Your father has to sign the land over to you through public records in order for you to actually own it.
